Bugs on seized drugs

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — These weren’t just bugs. These were bugs on drugs.

An Erie County judge signed a death warrant of sorts, so Erie police could burn about 70 pounds of seized khat — an illegal, leafy drug — being held as evidence and then hire an exterminator to kill bugs which had infested the drugs.

Police asked District Erie County Attorney Brad Foulk to get the court order because the drugs had attracted small bugs called drain flies. The drugs were burned May 21, and an exterminator was brought in later.

“We had no idea this stuff could carry bugs,” said Erie police Lt. Mike Nolan.

The drug can be chewed or smoked and is common in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, but relatively uncommon in northwestern Pennsylvania. Three men are still awaiting trial on charges they possessed the drugs, which were seized by police in March.
