Koehnlein, Procner named all-tourney

John Koehnlein batted over .500 and Stephen Procner had a complete-game win.

CHICAGO — Youngstown State sophomore John Koehnlein was named to the Horizon League all-tournament team Saturday night.

Koehnlein, from Toronto, batted .524 (11-for-21) in four tournament games, which included a 6-for-7 performance against Butler. The six hits set a conference tournament and school record.

Also named to the all-tournament team was Cleveland State left-hander Stephen Procner, a graduate of Girard High.

School record

Koehnlein finished the season with 108 hits, breaking the school record of 80, and batted .434, the second-highest mark in school history and the best since Roy Myers hit .456 in 1966.

In the tournament, Koehnlein scored six runs and had six RBIs, and had a double and 10 singles.

The Penguins won two games in the double-elimination tournament, their most since sweeping four games to win the 2004 conference title.

Youngstown State lost in the tournament opener, 16-6, to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, then rebounded for elimination-round wins over Butler, 20-7, and Cleveland State, 15-9. The Penguins then lost to Milwaukee, 9-0, Friday night.

Procner, a senior, threw a complete-game six-hitter in the tournament opener, as Cleveland State defeated Butler 6-1. He struck out five and allowed just two extra-base hits.

Procner finished the season with a 4-9 record and 4.31 ERA.

Illinois-Chicago, the top seed, won the conference tournament Saturday with a 14-2 victory over Wright State.

David Cales of UIC was named tournament MVP. He batted .615 (8-for-13) in three games, hitting three homers and three doubles, and driving in seven runs. He also earned a save in the Flames’ second-round win over Cleveland State.

Four other players from UIC were named to the all-tournament team — Larry Gempp, Nick Rainwater, Chad Schroeder and Ryan Zink. Also selected were Jesse Hart and Dan Luczak of Milwaukee, and Jeremy Hamilton and Brian Shoup of Wright State.
