Mahoning panel indicts man, 36, in store robbery

The discount store robbery suspect was identified in a photo lineup, police said.

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted an East Indianola Avenue man on an aggravated robbery charge in a May 14 robbery at the Family Dollar discount store on South Avenue in Boardman.

Indicted Thursday was Robert Perry, also known as Anthony Barnes, 36, of East Indianola Avenue, who was arrested the day after the robbery. The charge carries a repeat violent offender specification because of Perry’s November 2004 robbery conviction in Franklin County Common Pleas Court in Columbus.

Perry, who was released from prison in September, is accused of selecting car wax and candy at the South Avenue discount store and telling an employee to give him money from the cash register — saying he had a gun. After the employee gave him the money, Perry allegedly left in a stolen car, which police later found at an East Midlothian Boulevard apartment complex.

After cross-referencing a mug shot with other information, police said they discovered that Perry and Barnes are the same person. Witnesses to the Family Dollar robbery identified Perry from a photo lineup, police said.
