ROUNDUP \ Wednesday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 8, Red Sox 3

NEW YORK — Andy Pettitte pitched seven vigorous innings and Hideki Matsui hit one of two homers off an ineffective Curt Schilling to lead New York. Light-hitting Doug Mientkiewicz also connected and Derek Jeter passed Joe DiMaggio for fifth place on the franchise hits. Matsui drove in three runs, while Jeter, Mientkiewicz and Johnny Damon had three hits apiece. New York roughed up Schilling (4-2) for 12 hits, the most he had allowed since yielding 13 on April 22, 2004, at Toronto.

Twins 5, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas — Justin Morneau homered for the third time in two games and Boof Bonser won his third straight start. Morneau’s 14th homer of the season, a solo drive in the third off Robinson Tejeda (4-4), gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead.

Athletics 4, White Sox 0

CHICAGO — Chad Gaudin threw seven-plus scoreless innings, Hiram Bocachica hit his first home run in almost three seasons as Oakland beat Chicago. Gaudin (4-1) retired 16 straight from the second to the seventh, and won his second straight start to help the A’s end a three-game losing streak and avoid a series sweep by the White Sox. He gave up five hits and struck out four in 71⁄3 innings, walking one.

Mariners 5, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Jose Guillen had four hits and two RBIs, Miguel Batista gave up one run in six innings and Seattle handed Tampa Bay its fifth straight loss. Guillen’s single in the seventh drove in Jason Ellison and Ichiro Suzuki. Guillen is 14-for-37 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in his last 10 games, raising his average from .176 to .282. Batista (4-4) stopped a personal two-game losing skid. He allowed seven hits, two walks and had five strikeouts.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 2

BALTIMORE — Corey Patterson stole home at the end of a botched rundown, Brian Roberts went 3-for-3 with two walks, and Baltimore beat Toronto. Steve Trachsel (3-3) allowed two runs, five hits and three walks in six innings. The right-hander left with a 3-2 lead, and the beleaguered Baltimore bullpen made the advantage stand up.

Tigers 8, Angels 7

DETROIT — Magglio Ordonez had his 20th two-homer game and Detroit held on to snap Los Angeles’ six-game winning streak. Carlos Guillen and Curtis Granderson also homered for the Tigers. Granderson drove in three runs, Placido Polanco drove in two and Ivan Rodriguez was 3-for-4. Mike Napoli’s three-run homer in the eighth off of Jose Mesa pulled the Angels within 7-6. Orlando Cabrera and Shea Hillenbrand also hit home runs for the Angels.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 3, Braves 0

ATLANTA — Oliver Perez pitched seven strong innings and David Wright hit his fourth homer in the last four games as New York beat Atlanta. Perez (6-3) gave up only four hits and two walks in seven innings. Joe Smith pitched a perfect eighth and Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his 11th save to complete the five-hitter. Wright hit fourth for the third time this season, and Carlos Delgado — normally the cleanup hitter— hit sixth, the first time he’s hit that low in 10 years. Delgado, who began the night hitting .209, had two hits.

Nationals 12, Reds 7

CINCINNATI — Ryan Church returned to Washington’s lineup with a pair of homers and a career-high six RBIs, keeping the Nationals on their offensive tear. The Nationals hit a season-high four homers during their biggest run splurge in more than a year. Brian Schneider and Ryan Zimmerman also homered.

Phillies 8, Marlins 7, 10 innings

MIAMI — Abraham Nunez singled home the tie-breaking run in the 10th inning, and Philadelphia rebounded after blowing a four-run lead in the ninth to beat Florida. Florida tied the game with a bizarre rally that included two ejections, two defensive gaffes by the Phillies and an injury to their closer, Brett Myers, who left with a strained right shoulder. Jimmy Rollins led off the 10th with a single, advanced on Aaron Rowand’s single and took third when center fielder Alfredo Amezaga misplayed the ball for Florida’s third error. Nunez’s single off Kevin Gregg (0-2) scored the unearned run. He finished 2-for-3 with three walks and three runs scored.
