Suspicious fire guts vacant building

CAMPBELL — Fire of suspicious origin gutted a vacant commercial⁄apartment building at the corner of 12th Street and Robinson Road.

It appeared as though fires had been set in several parts of the 21⁄2-story brick structure, firefighters said.

The call came in around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, and the fire had already burned through the roof of three of the apartments, firefighters said.

Apartments at 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 on 12th St. were destroyed. Some still had furniture in them.

Firefighters from Campbell and Coitsville concentrated their efforts on keeping the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

Firefighters said the building, which once housed business showrooms on the first floor, has been vacant for about 15 years, and the county has no record of the current owner.

There were no injuries, and an estimate of damage wasn’t available.
