Inmate is found dead

YOUNGSTOWN — An inmate was found dead in his cell at the Ohio State Penitentiary off state Route 616.

Warden’s assistant Keith Sletcher said Daniel McCauley, 26, was found dead at 5:47 a.m. Sunday. He would not comment on the manner in which McCauley died but said the prison is investigating.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Southington Post is also investigating. The post could not release much information Monday.

Trooper Larry Skaggs said McCauley was found hanging in his cell. He could not confirm for how long. He said the death appears to be a suicide. The Mahoning County coroner’s office is investigating.

Sletcher said McCauley had been at the prison since February 1998 for aggravated murder, escape, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

His county of commitment was Jefferson County, Sletcher said.

Man hurt in fire

NILES — Louis Michaels, of 103 Poplar St., was in serious condition Monday at Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Unit after being pulled from the flames by police officer Les Nagy and Ray Knepper, a captain with the McKinley Heights Volunteer Fire Department. Knepper, who lives in the neighborhood, and Nagy arrived before city firefighters and pulled Michaels out of the back door Sunday evening.

Fire Lt. Rodney Freel said a natural gas explosion started the blaze at the one-story frame structure and placed the damage at between $40,000 and $50,000. The actual cause of the explosion hasn’t been determined because investigators have been unable to talk with Michaels due to his condition.

Weston and his passenger, Jessica Economus, 21, of Youngstown-Hubbard Road, Hubbard, were not injured. The crash remains under investigation, the patrol said.
