Liberty 83, Sky 71

NEW YORK — Erin Thorn scored a career-high 28 points to rally New York over Chicago in the season opener for both teams. The Liberty matched a franchise record with 13 3-pointers, including a career-best seven by Thorn. New York, which also hit 13 3s at Chicago last July 25, topped its Madison Square Garden mark of 12 against Phoenix last July 9. Shameka Christon scored 14 points, Loree Moore had 12 and Cathrine Kraayeveld 10. The Liberty snapped a seven-game losing skid in season openers. Monique Currie had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Chicago, and Candice Dupree added 12 points.

Monarchs 74, Lynx 64

MINNEAPOLIS — Kara Lawson scored 19 points and the Monarchs continued their recent dominance over the Lynx. The Monarchs have won nine straight games against Minnesota, with their last loss coming July 11, 2004, at Target Center. Last season’s rookie of the year Seimone Augustus led all scorers with 28 points for the Lynx despite leaving Saturday’s game against Indiana in the fourth quarter with a bruised right quadriceps.
