Monday, May 21, 2007

YOUNGSTOWN — An inmate was found dead in his cell over the weekend at the Ohio State Penitentiary.

Warden’s assistant Keith Sletcher said Daniel McCauley, 26, was found dead at 5:47 a.m. Sunday. He would not comment on the manner in which McCauley died, but said the prison is investigating.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Southington Post is also investigating. The post could not release much information Monday.

Trooper Larry Skaggs said McCauley was found hanging in his cell. He could not confirm for how long. He said the death appears to be a suicide.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office said they are still investigating.

Sletcher said McCauley had been at the prison since February 1998. He was incarcerated for aggravated murder, escape, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary, Sletcher said.

His county of commitment was Jefferson County, Sletcher said.
