Baseball team
swept by CSU

LORAIN — Sophomore John Koehnlein broke the school record by hitting in his 25th consecutive game, but Youngstown State ended the regular season by being swept by Cleveland State in a Saturday doubleheader at Pipe Yard Stadium.

YSU led 4-1 and 6-3 in game one before Cleveland State scored the game’s final six runs to win 9-6. The Penguins outhit the Vikings 14-11, but their three errors led to six unearned runs.

In game two, Cleveland State led the entire way and scored five straight runs late in the game to win, 9-6.

In the opener, Brent Parks hit an opposite field solo home run in the second to put YSU up 1-0, but Matt Madrid hit a leadoff homer in the third to tie the score.

Tom Clayton’s three-run triple in the fifth made the score 4-1. After the Vikings scored two unearned runs in the sixth to get within one, Mike Turjanica had an RBI single and Parks walked with the bases loaded to keep the three-run advantage.

The Vikings then scored four unearned runs to take a one-run lead in the seventh after the first two batters reached on errors, and they added two insurance runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Starter Chuck Schiffhauer allowed five runs — only one was earned — on six hits in 61⁄3 innings without factoring in the decision. Ryan Sellman was charged with the loss, allowing two unearned runs in the seventh.

Pat McKitrick earned the win for CSU, throwing 21⁄3 scoreless innings of relief.

In game two, Cleveland State built a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third. The run in the second was the Vikings’ first of five unearned runs in the game.

The Penguins had four straight hits to start the third and got two runs on RBI hits from Josh Page and Erich Diedrich, but Dylan Henry got Lee Bainbridge to line into an inning-ending double play with two runners on.

Clayton’s solo homer in the bottom of the fifth made the score 4-3, but CSU went on to score three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

YSU scored three unearned runs with two outs in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate before Michael Babin came in to get Anthony Munoz to pop out with a full count.

Adam Kalafos suffered the loss in game two, allowing six runs — three earned — on six hits in 52⁄3 innings. Jeremy Hartman earned his fourth win for the VIkings, allowing four runs - one of which was earned - in 52⁄3 innings of relief. Koehnlein had to wait until his final at bat in game one to tie the school record. Held hitless in three at bats and a sacrifice bunt, Koehnlein hit the first pitch into center field. He then doubled to lead off the third in game two to break the record of 24 straight games set by Kellen Dixon in 2001 and Lou Vassalotti in 1994.

The Penguins will play in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament on Wednesday at Les Miller Field on UIC’s campus in Chicago. The tournament pairings will be announced on Monday, and the all-league teams will be announced on Tuesday.

REGION

Marte activated

CLEVELAND — Third baseman Andy Marte, who strained his left hamstring while running to first base last month, was activated from the disabled list by the Indians on Saturday.

Marte is batting .179 (7-for-39) with a homer and eight RBIs in 13 games with four errors. He went on the disabled list April 23 and began a 20-day rehabilitation assignment on April 29, hitting hit .242 (8-for-33) with two homers and three RBIs in 10 games.

While the Indians are high on Marte, the decision to return him to the 25-man roster was not clear cut. Casey Blake, who took over at third base, had a 10-game hitting streak going into Saturday and has played well defensively.

Blake began the season alternating between first base and right field. If the Indians return to that plan, it could cut in to first baseman Ryan Garko’s playing time. Garko had an eight-game hitting streak and was batting .321 before Saturday’s game.

Marte, acquired from Boston last year, batted .226 with five homers and 23 RBIs in 50 games last season.

To make room for Marte, the Indians optioned outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to Triple-A Buffalo.
