Red Bulls 4, Columbus 0

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Juan Pablo Angel scored a goal and added two assists in just his second Major League Soccer game to lead the undermanned New York Red Bulls to a win over the Columbus Crew. John Wolyniec added a goal and an assist for the Red Bulls (4-1-2), who are now tied with New England for first place in the Eastern Conference. Andy Gruenebaum had two saves for Columbus (1-2-4), which failed to score despite several opportunities. Angel, a 31-year-old from Colombia who starred for Aston Villa in the English Premier League before signing with the Red Bulls last month as a designated player, scored off a steal in the 61st minute. He took an errant pass from Crew defender Marcos Gonzalez and beat a sprawling Gruenebaum for the score.

United 2, FC 1

TORONTO — Jaime Moreno scored his MLS record-tying 108th goal on a 79th-minute penalty kick. It was the 32nd successful penalty for the 12-year veteran, and his third goal of the season. He tied Jason Kreis for the league record. Trailing 1-0 at the half, D.C. United struck back quickly in the 53nd minute on an own goal when Christian Gomez’s swerving free kick from long range went in off Toronto fullback Kevin Goldthwaite’s head. Toronto’s Alecko Eskandarian opened the scoring in the 44th minute.
