Baseball splits

LORAIN — Lucas Engle allowed one earned run in 82⁄3 innings as Youngstown State defeated Cleveland State, 7-3 in the first game of Friday’s Horizon League doubleheader.

Cleveland State benefited from six Penguins’ errors to win the nightcap, 10-3.

Vasili Pahoulis (Howland) doubled for CSU in the opener, scoring one of the Vikings’ runs.

Engle retired 14 straight hitters at one point.

Lee Bainbridge hit a solo home run, his third of the season, in the opener.

The teams play another doubleheader today at noon.

Boardman beats
Canton McKinley

CANTON — Megan Ramsey’s single in the top of the eighth inning scored Katie Hawkins with the go-ahead run to snap a 1-1 tie, as Boardman defeated Canton McKinley, 3-1, in a Federal League softball game Friday.

Hawkins, who opened the inning with a single, finished with two singles.

Kelsey Ford pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for Boardman (12-13, 4-5 FL). Ford also hit a solo homer.

Liberty edges Falls

LIBERTY — Sam Jaffee pitched four shutout innings in relief as Liberty defeated Newton Falls 8-7 in 10 innings in a Trumbull Athletic Conference baseball game.

Kyle Conway had four hits and scored the winning run for the Leopards (8-12, 7-6).

names coach

HERMITAGE — Thomas Burns, a 1982 graduate of Kennedy Catholic, has been named the school’s girls basketball coach.

Tennis awards

WARREN — The Ohio Tennis Coaches Association awarded its Gold Racquet Award to senior Stephanie Pentz, and its Silver Racquet Award to junior Alison Rossi.

Both girls attend Warren JFK High.

The gold award is presented to seniors who have earned two letters and maintained at least a 3.75 GPA for seven semesters. The silver award is for juniors who have earned two letters and maintained a 3.75 GPA for five semesters.

Lamport assists Kent

KENT — Reid Lamport (Poland) pitched a perfect 11th inning to get the victory as the Kent State baseball team defeated Buffalo 2-1 Friday.

With the win Kent clinched the Mid-American Conference East Division title for the second straight season.

YOUNGSTOWN — Ryan Newman’s No. 12 Alltel Dodge will be in the area this weekend. Today, the car will be at the Alltel retail store, 4774 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The car will be the Alltel store at 474 Boardman-Canfield Rd. Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Red Bulls fund-raiser

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ohio Red Bulls of the North American Football League will hold a preseason game and fundraiser today at South Field at 5 p.m. against the Penn Ohio Raiders of Sharon and the United States Football Association.

Half of the gate proceeds will be donated to the Coleman family in memory of Natalia Rael Coleman, age 2, who died last month of cancer. 

Admission is $5 for ages 13-adult.

A photo caption in Friday's Vindicator on C1 Sports incorrectly stated that United High School runner Jordan Johnson won the preliminary 110-meter hurdles Thursday. The race was won by his teammate, Tom Avers, who advanced to today’s finals in the Division II district track and field meet at Reilly Stadium.
