MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) -- A judge granted 50 million Wednesday to the Ohio sister and other survivors of a Michigan woman in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the woman's husband, who is charged with killing and dismembering her.
Macomb County Circuit Judge Matthew Switalski issued a default judgment in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Stephen Grant by the sister of his slain wife, Tara Grant.
The sister, Alicia Standerfer of Chillicothe, Ohio, earlier was granted temporary custody of the Grants' children, ages 4 and 6.
The wrongful death suit, filed in early April, was never answered by Stephen Grant, who awaits a June 4 preliminary examination on charges of murder and mutilation of a corpse.
The family never expects to receive the full amount sought from Stephen Grant, said Standerfer's lawyer, Patrick Simasko.
"There isn't a price you can put on losing your mother," Simasko told the Detroit Free Press. "They would pay 50 million to get their mom back."
But Simasko told The Detroit News that the default judgment will prevent Grant "from profiting from a book deal in the future, or selling any pictures on the Internet. We stopped that."
Switalski's decision came hours after Probate Judge Pamela Gilbert O'Sullivan ruled that Grant has no rights to his deceased wife's assets, including two insurance policies, 401(k) plan and her half of the suburban Detroit home they shared before her death Feb. 9.
Grant also was not represented in the petition to deny him his wife's assets. O'Sullivan took less than five minutes to decide for Standerfer, saying, "I have no hesitation in granting this request."
Authorities say Grant killed his wife at their Washington Township home, about 25 miles north of Detroit. Body parts were found in their garage and a nearby park. Grant was arrested March 4, two days after police searching the home discovered Tara Grant's torso in a freezer.
