STRUTHERS -- The only thing that was able to solve Jim Kinnick of Austintown Fitch was mother nature Wednesday evening.
Rain and wet field conditions at Cene Park suspended the Division I baseball district final between Austintown Fitch and Lakewood St. Edward with the game scoreless heading into the top of the sixth inning.
Kinnick allowed just one single in the first five innings and had eight strikeouts. He survived four Falcons errors in the opening three innings which had two Eagles reach third base.
"What an outstanding performance for Jimmy. He had command of all his pitches. The sad thing is we had some chances but could not get anyone in," said Fitch coach Wally Ford.
Falcons had opportunities
The Falcons had at least one hit in each of the first five innings, and left two men on base in the third, fourth, and fifth frames. Joe Koch had a pair of singles for Fitch, still Aaron Costin managed to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard. He had four strikeouts in the first five innings.
The game will resume today at 5:30 p.m. on Field 1. When asked about his pitching, Ford said, "That is a good question. We have a few guys with a lot of rest, and [Steve] Gruver is a possibility. Jimmy [Kinnick] says he feels fine but that is tonight, so we will see."
