Area players are eliminated from Div. II district tourney
CANTON -- Area tennis standouts didn't fare well in the opening rounds of the Division II district tennis tournament Wednesday at Weis Park Courts.
All three singles players and four doubles teams from the area were eliminated.
Poland's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles team were the only ones to make it past the first round.
Brad and Ben Brocker, the Bulldogs' No. 1 team, defeated Josh Berggrun and Steve Schneider of Orange in the first round, 6-1, 7-5, then lost to Canton Central Catholic's Quinn Parker and Jon Esber, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
Poland's No. 2 team of Chad Ruehs and Matt McElroy defeated Lake Ridge Academy's Lee Howley and Sammy Droudi, 7-6 (1), 6-0 in the first round, but were defeated by Beachwood's Mark Goodberg and Grant Aronson, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
Cardinal Mooney's Rob Ciotola and Ed Reese lost in the first round to Medina Highland's Aris Spirtos and Rodney James, 6-1, 7-5, while Albert Covelli and Larry D'Amico of Warren JFK lost to David Huang and Steven Shin of University School, 6-1, 6-1.
In singles, Poland's Anthony Roselli lost to Zak Kelm of University School, 6-2, 6-0, while the Bulldogs' Ryan Teckchandani dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Brad Lodge of Aurora. Cardinal Mooney's Josh Cook was ousted by Victor Hill of Vermilion, 6-4, 6-4.
The tournament's semifinals and finals will be played Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
The Division I district tournament, at Oberlin College, is scheduled to begin today at 9 a.m.
