Charles Lazarus dies at 93; store founded in 1851
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Charles Lazarus, the last member of his family to lead its namesake Lazarus chain of department stores, died after a brief illness, his son said. Lazarus, 93, died at home in suburban Gahanna on Monday.
The chain, founded in 1851 by Lazarus' great-grandfather in Columbus, grew to more than 40 stores in five states in the Midwest. The family's influence in the stores declined when Federated Department Stores Inc. moved Lazarus' headquarters to Cincinnati in 1986. In 2005, Federated renamed Lazarus stores as Macy's.
