43K windfall for New Middletown

NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The village received an unexpected windfall this month.
Clerk Carl Flitcraft Jr. told council Monday the village received 43,000 in inheritance taxes last week. He said the village rarely receives more than 1,000 from inheritance taxes. For now, no plans have been made for the money, which has been placed in an interest-bearing account.
Also Monday:
Solicitor Jeff Heintz reported the village's concealed weapon ordinance is more restrictive than the state's and that recent revisions to Ohio's law make this illegal. The problem is the village prohibits concealed weapons in the park, which the state ordinance does not forbid.
Council member Jack Novicky asked the solicitor to look into an ordinance prohibiting engine retarding brakes on Calla Road to solve noise problems there. Council had discussed the matter previously but took no action. Novicky said it is "a quality-of-life issue."
Police Chief Bill Morvay reported that a new sliding board for Welker Park is scheduled for delivery Friday. It will replace the old one, deemed unsafe by the village's insurance company.
The Memorial Day parade is set for May 28. Lineup will be at 9:30 a.m. at Springfield High School, with the parade to begin at 10. Anyone wishing to participate should call Morvay or Clerk Janet Smith at (330) 542-2846.
