Mooney's Porter blanks WR



Ursuline, Niles and Champion posted big victories.
BERLIN CENTER -- Freshman Chrissy Porter pitched her first complete-game shutout Friday as the Cardinal Mooney High School softball team blanked Western Reserve, 6-0.
Porter (2-1) allowed just three hits, struck out seven and tripled for the Cardinals (3-1).
With Mooney leading 1-0 in the third inning, the Cardinals bundled a single, consecutive triples by Porter and Mara Palombaro and a sacrifice fly by Laura Guyer for a 4-0 lead.
Guyer singled twice.
Macey Marra and Erika Goddard doubled for the Blue Devils (1-3).
Ursuline 7, Mineral Ridge 1
VIENNA -- Casey Lower (3-0) scattered four hits and struck out eight to lead the unbeaten Irish (3-0) to the victory at the Thunderplex.
Nika Bonamase hit a two-run home run for Ursuline in the first inning. Mary Hendricks hit three singles and stole a base for the Irish and Natalie Palermo hit a single, double and drove in four runs.
Niles 10, Chaney 0
NILES -- Aubrey Hale (1-0) scattered two hits and struck out six to pick up the win for the Red Dragons (2-3) at Waddell Park.
Stephanie Taneyhill hit three singles and scored three times for Niles. Melyssa Spowart hit three singles, drove in a run and scored two times.
Struthers 4, Springfield 1
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Wildcats broke a 1-1 tie as they scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Ellen Becket hit a double and single, while Dana Mathews, Sam Ditman and Brittany Bovo each hit two singles for the Wildcats.
Rebecca Evan hit a double and single to pace the Tigers (2-2).
Champion 8, Berkshire 1
BURTON -- Katie Saluga, Jackie Knipp and Jessica Frantz each hit safely twice for the Golden Flashes (2-0).
Berkshire (0-2) was held to one hit by Morgan White (2-0).
McDonald 7, Girard 3
GIRARD -- Aly Moliterno had four hits and scored a run for Girard (0-3).
Mathews 2, Ledgemont 0
VIENNA -- Caitlyn Youngs pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Mathews improved to 2-1.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after Youngs singled and moved to third as Kayla Gilmore reached base on an error. When the Ledgemont (3-2) third baseman picked up the ball, she threw to first base for an error allowing both runners to score.
Lowellville 3, Crestview 2
LOWELLVILLE -- Carla Belinsky (2-1) scattered six hits and set a school record with 16 strikeouts leading the Rockets to the eight-inning victory.
Belinsky, who better the record of 15 she set last year, led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double. She stole third, but stayed there when Stacey Garcia singled to the Rebels' third basemen.
Belinsky and Garcia then scored on a double by Cory Pavlicko, who also hit a single early in the contest.
Casey Wilson doubled home pinch runner Neena Guerrieri with the Rockets first run in the fifth inning.
Crestview had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning as Kelsey Richards reached base on an error and scored on a single by Mallory Plugh.
Lakeview 10, Badger 0
CORTLAND -- The Bulldogs scored six runs in the second inning and four in the third in rolling to their fourth straight victory.
Kailynn Cerny (2-0) fired a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.
Jen Baker hit two doubles, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Bulldogs.
Joanna Novotny, Chelsea Butler, Jessica Downs and Brigitte Morvay each had two singles for Lakeview.
Northwest 6, West Branch 0
CANAL FULTON -- Jen Joseph (3-0) pitched a two-hitter in lead Northwest to victory in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference contest.
Krista Horbaugh hit a pair of singles to pace Northwest. Bri Benedict and Jessica Early each hit single for the Warriors.
Struthers 11, Liberty 1
STRUTHERS -- Ellen Becker pitched a no-hitter, leading the Wildcats to a five-inning victory on Thursday.
Struthers scored five runs in the first inning and six more in the third.
Dom Martino hit a double and single and drove in a run for the Wildcats.
Pam Sajnovsky hit a pair of singles and drove in a run and Dana Mathews singled and drove in three runs.
Liberty scored its only run in the first inning on an error.
