Ungaro to be speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pat Ungaro, administrator of Liberty Township, will speak in the ongoing Voices of Youngstown series, noon to 1 p.m. April 13 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. He will discuss the topics related to economic development in Liberty Township and how the township can work with Youngstown. Ungaro is a former Youngstown mayor.
Big Reach School
GREENFORD -- Registration packets for the Big Reach Back to School 2007 project, which is open to the public, may be picked up at the Big Reach Center of Hope at Greenford Christian Church, 11767 Lisbon Road. Big Reach School will be Aug. 4.
Families also may obtain packets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, from April 3 through 26. Completed registration forms must be submitted by May 15. Children eligible to receive assistance must be no older than 18.
OxyContin pills stolen
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township police are looking for a man who robbed a South Avenue pharmacy Thursday afternoon.
Chief Carl Frost said the man, described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, in his 30s, balding and wearing a stocking cap, went into the North Lima Pharmacy shortly before 2 p.m., threatened employees and stole OxyContin, a powerful prescription painkiller.
The man fled on foot, the chief said.
Input from constituents
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire will launch his "Congress on Your Corner" program Saturday at the Shop 'N Save Supermarket, 2016 W. State St., in Union Township.
Altmire, of McCandless, Pa., D-4th, and some of his staff will be at the store from 2 to 4 p.m. to discuss issues and assist constituents with problems they may have with federal agencies.
Altmire, who represents Lawrence County and a portion of Mercer County, plans to hold other "Congress on Your Corner" events.
"I can't do my job without the input of my constituents," he said. "I look forward to traveling around the district and talking one-on-one with people about the issues that matter to them most."
North Pool progress
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's park and recreation commission is expected to hire a contractor to build a new North Pool shortly, said Joseph McRae, its director. Proposals to build the pool were opened only a week ago, and the commission opted Thursday to give its members more time to look at the offers, he said. The board should have a decision sometime in April, McRae added. A.P. O'Horo of Liberty submitted the apparent low proposal of 1,453,566 for the pool.
Partnering with Hospice
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City Medical Center is partnering with Family Hospice and Palliative Care to provide more end-of-life care for terminally ill patients.
Family Hospice and Palliative Care has been providing care and comfort to patients for more than 26 years. The role of hospice is to guide patients and their loved ones through the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical situations that arise near the end of life. With hospice, patients can remain at home or in a homelike environment in peace, comfort and dignity.
Family Hospice and Palliative Care cares for more than 350 patients a day in 11 counties in western Pennsylvania. It is based in Pittsburgh.
Historical groups
WARREN -- Representatives of Trumbull County historical societies, museums, sites and other historical organizations will meet to discuss how they can collaborate on promotions, raise general awareness of individual sites and share information. The meeting will be from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. Shelley Taylor, president of Trumbull 100, and Barbara Ewing, community relations director for U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, will speak on ways their respective offices can help the organizations. More than 300 historical organizations have been identified in the county.
