Privatization
Aqua Ohio is offering to buy or lease the Youngstown water system. City officials say they aren't interested. But there are some private companies that either operate or propose to operate public entities. They include:
CiviGenics, a Marlborough, Mass., correctional service firm that manages 11 public owned jails and prisons. Of the 11, 10 are in Texas and the other is the 192-person Columbiana County Jail in Lisbon.
The Indiana Toll Road is leased to the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company, a Spanish-Australian joint venture between Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte and Macquarie Infrastructure Group. Chicago also is leasing its Chicago Skyway to the same two companies. Pennsylvania and Florida are exploring similar lease agreements on some of their paid roadways.
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich wants to privatize the state's lottery.
