Lakeview defeats Niles



NILES -- Jen Baker's two hits included a double Wednesday as the Lakeview High softball team defeated Niles, 5-2.
Also with two hits for the Bulldogs (2-0) were Amy Downs and Brigitte Morvay. Chelsea Butler doubled.
Winning pitcher Kailynn Cerny scattered eight hits, struck out 12 and walked none.
For Niles (0-3), Melyssa Spowart and Stephanie Taneyhill had two hits each while Brooke Joseph doubled.
Mineral Ridge 7, Mathews 6
VIENNA -- Senior Jen Mousie crossed the plate with the seventh run in a six-run fourth inning for Mineral Ridge (1-2).
Seniors Melanie Sparks and Roxaenne Marsteller and sophomore Debra Danadic all had two hits for the winners. Sparks and winning pitcher Brooke Brdek had a double apiece.
Hubbard 2, Chaney 0
HUBBARD -- Kara Egelsky pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13 batters to lead Hubbard to its second straight win.
Michelle Stitetich had three hits and drove in both runs in the first inning for the Eagles.
Howland 13, Warren Harding 0
HOWLAND -- Casey Haering struck out six in pitching a one-hitter over five innings and the sophomore also had two hits for the Tigers (1-0).
Haering also walked one Harding batter. Also getting two hits for the winners were Carly Sabat and Tiffany Jaques. Sabat and Jaques both knocked in three runs.
Southern 2, Lowellville 0
LOWELLVILLE -- Hannah Crews of Southern pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to best Carla Blinsky of Lowellville (1-1), who pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts in an Inter Tri-County League Tier Two game.
Crews had two singles while Emily Ramsey had three stolen bases to aid the Indians (1-1).
Warren JFK 1, Girard 0
GIRARD -- Sophomore Rachel Pico pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and one walk.
Warren JFK scored the only run in the top of the eighth inning on a fielder's choice in the Eagles' opening game. Freshman Gina Gelsomino scored from third base on Alex Raeburn's groundout.
McDonald 5, Springfield 2
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Lauren Walls pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts while Sara Ingalls belted a solo homer and a run-scoring single to pace McDonald (3-0).
Jessica Ferraro had two singles and one RBI to aid the Blue Devils.
