Junior Civic League announces April 9 deadline for scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Junior Civic League awarded more than 10,000 in scholarships last year to graduating seniors at area high schools in Mahoning Valley.
This year, the league has formed a partnership with Youngstown State University Foundation to create the Junior Civic Scholarship, which will match proceeds from the 2006 Cinderella Ball, making additional scholarships available for eligible freshmen attending YSU.
Scholarships are awarded to academically talented black students who attend a public or private school in the Valley and plan the full-time pursuit of an undergraduate college degree. The students are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and personal qualities.
The student eligibility criteria for the scholarship program are:
Must have at least one parent of African-American origin.
Must be a graduating senior at a public or private high school in Mahoning Valley.
Must seek an associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the United States, or enroll in a school of nursing that is affiliated with a university.
Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative grade point average of no less than a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
The nonrenewable scholarships are 1,500 each and are divided into increments paid upon proof of enrollment and grades each semester or quarter during the freshmen year.
Applications must be postmarked no later than April 9 and will be evaluated by the Junior Civic League. They must be accompanied by an official high school transcript, a personal essay, three letters of recommendation and proof of a household income.
