Hospitalized after crash
VIENNA -- One man remains hospitalized as the result of a two-vehicle crash along state Route 11 in Vienna on Tuesday afternoon. Thomas A. Cowher Jr., 53, of Poland, the driver of a minivan, remains in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. The driver of a truck, Robert Lippmann, 49, of Mercer, Pa., was treated at St. Elizabeth's.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the minivan appeared to be on the right side berm of the southbound lane, between King Graves Road and Route 82, about 1:30 p.m. The southbound truck went off the right side of the road, striking the minivan. No charges have been filed as the crash remains under investigation.
Reopening classrooms
BELOIT -- School district officials are preparing to reopen the two Beloit Elementary classrooms where pupils first reported symptoms of the rash that affected 37 in the district this month. Classes have resumed since last Friday at the school, but the classrooms were locked pending the result of Environmental Protection Agency tests. Preliminary test results, returned Tuesday, revealed no abnormalities. District officials are steam-cleaning the rooms before they are reopened Monday.
Carjacking reported
WARREN -- A 60-year-old Warren man reported to police that he was the victim of a carjacking. The man said he was dropping off a woman in the 2600 block of Draper Street Southeast about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday when a man ran out of a house with a knife, forced him out of his 1989 Chevrolet and drove off with the car.
Taking new enrollments
AUSTINTOWN -- St. Joseph School, 4565 New Road, has been added to the list of private Mahoning County schools accepting new enrollments through the state's Education Choice school voucher program. The school offers education from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Trustees to meet
LIBERTY -- Township trustees will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday to discuss the township's 2007 budget. The meeting will be at the administration building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road.
Speaking about bees
CORTLAND -- Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture Magazine, will speak on swarm management at a meeting of the Trumbull County Beekeepers Association at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Trumbull County Agriculture Building, 520 W. Main St., Cortland.

Meetings about levy
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Township Fire Department has set four informational public meetings about Springfield Township's five-year, 2-mill renewal levy for fire and emergency medical services which will be on the May 8 primary election ballot. All meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m. Locations and dates are: Monday at Fire Station 22, 13885 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, Petersburg; April 9 at New Springfield Fire Station 23, 13775 Woodworth Road; April 30 at the EMS and fire chief's offices in the township building at 3475 E. South Range Road; and May 7 at Station 21, 10720 Struthers Road, New Middletown.
Bound over to jury
NILES -- A 33-year-old Youngstown man was bound over to the Trumbull County grand jury on a charge of aggravated robbery. Henry Edmonds of Krieger Lane waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday before municipal Judge Thomas Townley. Edmonds is accused of robbing the Country Fair convenience store on Youngstown Road on March 15.
Anticipating finances
GIRARD -- City officials anticipate ending 2007 111,144 in the red, but Mayor James Melfi said it will not take much longer to put the city in the black. Melfi plans to present what he calls his last financial recovery plan to the state appointed fiscal commission in 60 days. The city started 2006 more than 970,000 in debt and started 2007 more than 265,000 in debt.
Councilman Dan Moadus told members of the fiscal commission that council is considering putting about 60,000 into a fund to buy new police cars.
