YOUNGSTOWN -- A benefit concert will be held April 7 at Cedar's Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St., for Sonny Boy Hopchick (aka Ronnie Hrehovcik), a local entertainer and showman who recently suffered a heart attack. The concert will begin at 9:30 p.m.
Sonny Boy has been the owner-operator of Underdog Music Mayhem since 1975. He has led numerous bands, including The Todd and Sonny Needs Money, but is best known as the singer/guitarist for the Sacksville Rhythm and Blues Band, which has been performing since the early 1980s and has opened for Bob Dylan, NRBQ and Southside Johnny. He also works as a guitar teacher and has taught several generations of local musicians.
Musical acts performing at the benefit will include the original Sacksville band (plus alumni), The 8 Balls, The Smarties and November Loop, with open jamming throughout the evening. WNCD radio personality Viking Jim will emcee the event.
There will also be a Chinese auction featuring works by local artists, tattoo shops, musical shops and other items. Anyone wishing to contribute money, items or gift certificates can contact Timber Gilliland at (330) 565-3193 or Robyn Maas at (330) 744-4315.
Raridon singers concert
BOARDMAN -- The Wade Raridon Singers will give a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Church, Route 224 and Westview Avenue. The group is made up of singers who either studied at Dana School of Music or under Dr. Wade Raridon, a retired professor of music at YSU's Dana School. Raridon established the Dana Chorale and the Dana Madrigal Singers.
Boardman High Jazz Fest
BOARDMAN -- The seventh annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest will be at 7 p.m. April 3 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
This year's event will include the premiere performance of BHS Jazz Ensemble 3, a group formed this year because of the interest in the school's jazz program. Jazz Ensemble 2 will provide a unique blend of jazz and blues, including songs with vocals, and guest band will be an all-star alumni ensemble of past BHS graduates and others related to the jazz program. Headliner will be BHS Jazz Ensemble 1. Thomas M. Ruggieri is director of bands.
Tickets are 3 for adults and 2 for students and will be available at the door. Senior citizens and children will be admitted for free.
WJMB seeks members
WARREN -- The Warren Junior Military Band, celebrating its 80th anniversary, is welcoming new members. Rehearsals will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Aristocrat Bingo Hall in Youngstown. Musicians ages 11-21 are welcome.
