Girard officials expect to end '07 in the red

GIRARD — City officials anticipate ending 2007 $111,144 in the red, but Mayor James Melfi said it will not take much longer to put the city in the black.

Melfi plans to present what he calls his last financial recovery plan to the state appointed fiscal commission in 60 days. The city started 2006 more than $970,000 in debt and started 2007 more than $265,000 in debt.

Councilman Dan Moadus told members of the fiscal commission that council is considering putting about $60,000 into a fund to buy new police cars. Council has been discussing possibly buying new cars. The last police vehicles were purchased in 1996.
