Concert to benefit showman Sonny Boy Hopchick


YOUNGSTOWN — A benefit concert will be held April 7 at Cedar’s Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St., for Sonny Boy Hopchick (aka Ronnie Hrehovcik), a popular local entertainer and showman who recently suffered a heart attack. The concert will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Sonny Boy has been the owner-operator of Underdog Music Mayhem since 1975. He has led numerous bands, including The Todd and Sonny Needs Money, but is probably best known as the singer/guitarist for the Sacksville Rhythm and Blues Band, which has performing since the early 1980s. Sacksville has opened for Bob Dylan, NRBQ and Southside Johnny.

He also works as a guitar teacher and has taught several generations of local musicians.

Musical acts performing at the benefit will include the original Sacksville Rhythm and Blues Band (plus various alumni), The 8 Balls, The Smarties and November Loop, with open jamming throughout the evening.. WNCD radio personality Viking Jim will emcee the event.
