Grand opening for Rockets; Springfield blanks Clippers



Krista Kiraly drove in four runs to lead Jackson-Milton past Western Reserve.
SALINEVILLE -- Lowellville's Cori Pavlicko hit a grand slam and a pair doubles to tie a school record with six RBIs, leading the Rockets to a 14-3 victory over Southern in the season opener Monday.
Lowellville pitcher Carla Belinsky, who scattered four hits and struck out six to pick up the win, hit a pair of singles, stole a base and drove in a run. Jacque Schrader hit two singles, stole two bases and drove in a run and Kristen Pallozzi hit two singles.
Losing pitcher Hannah Crews hit two singles and drove in a run for the Indians.
Springfield 2, Columbiana 0
COLUMBIANA -- Sophomore Erica Burkey of the Tigers (1-0) pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and she didn't walk a batter to pick up the win.
The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Andria Lyons and Melissa Carabello walked. Ashley Davis singled home Lyons and Caraballo scored on a groundout.
Amanda Crowl doubled for the Clippers' only hit in the second inning. Columbiana's Paige Papania (0-1) scattered five hits with four strikeouts.
McDonald 10, Sebring 2
SEBRING -- Lauren Walls had three hits and scored three runs and also pitched the victory for McDonald.
Kat Rutushin and Jess Ferraro each added two hits for the Blue Devils.
Chelsea Neeb had a double and Katie Wilson added two hits for Sebring.
Jackson-Milton 7, Western Reserve 5
BERLIN CENTER -- Krista Kiraly drove in four runs with a home run and a single and also pitched the victory for Jackson-Milton in the season opener.
Elizabeth Srock struck out 14 batters in a losing effort for Western Reserve, while McKenzie Mowery had three hits including a double and triple.
Boardman 5, Struthers 2
BOARDMAN -- Jamie Massaro had three singles and two RBIs, while Justine Cullen added a hit and two RBIs. Kelsey Ford got the win.
For Struthers, Halle Minchin-Skook had two hits.
Southeast 7, Rootstown 0
ROOTSTOWN -- Shannon Hamilton threw a one-hitter in pitching a complete game for Southeast. She also hit a double and two singles.
Jen Gahagan hit a single and double and drove in four runs, while Danielle Kaley and Lindsey Speidell each hit two singles.
Lauren Hughes hit a double for Rootstown.
Canton Central Catholic 11, West Branch 1
BELOIT -- Canton Central Catholic scored five times in the first inning and then rolled past West Branch.
Rebecca Mines and Mackenzie Smith each had three hits for the winners, while Courtney Nicholson pitched a two-hitter and also added a double and triple at the plate.
Brittany Snyder and Sammie Snyder had the only hits for West Branch.
