First-inning explosion keys Ursuline to victory



Chris Weibel's two-hitter led Girard in a blowout win over Chagrin Falls.
STRUTHERS -- Mark Lapikas had a triple, double and two singles, and drove in five runs to lead Ursuline, which scored 10 runs in the first inning at Cene Park and went on to a 19-9 win over Hubbard Monday.
Ed Rohan added a solo homer and a single, Ross Revella two triples and Todd Sinn two doubles to aid the Irish.
Tom Jones smacked a triple and single and drove in two runs to lead Hubbard.
Girard 17, Chagrin Falls 1
KENT -- Chris Weibel pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk as Girard rapped 14 hits to roll in its season opener at Kent State.
Larry Goist had two doubles and two RBIs, Joe Danko a two-run single and another RBI and R.J. Trimbur a two-run triple to lead Girard. Brett Cubellis chipped in with three singles.
West Branch 4, Beaver Local 2
LISBON -- Chad Kitzmiller worked four innings, allowed only one hit and struck out six to pick up the win for the Warriors. Adam Dunlap came on in the fourth inning, gave up only one hit and struck out three.
Jarrod Harris hit a double and single for West Branch, while Tyler Newhart hit two singles.
Howland 10, Lakeview 0
HOWLAND -- The Tigers broke open the contest as they scored seven runs in the second inning and Zack Byler hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Freshman Matt Preston hit a pair of doubles and a single, drove in a run and stole a base. Ryan Kellar pitched a complete game with three strikeouts to pick up the win.
Springfield 12, Columbiana 2
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Dane Dobson went 3-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases for the Tigers, who scored eight runs in the second inning to take control in an Inter Tri-County League Tier One game.
Bryan Visingardi added two hits and Travis Richey had two hits, two runs and three stolen bases.
Steve German had a hit and an RBI for the Clippers.
Sebring 6, McDonald 5
SEBRING -- Alan Jurica drove home Brandon Mitzel with the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for Sebring in its season opener.
Jurica had two hits, while Zack Tieche went 62/3 innings to get the mound win. Brennan Burk also had a double for Sebring.
Western Reserve 3,Jackson-Milton 2
BERLIN CENTER -- The Blue Devils broke a 1-1 tie as they scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bluejays (0-1) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but Nick Timko came on relief and got Ryan Clawson to ground out to end the game and pick up a save.
Jerod Barker scattered three hits and struck out six to pick up the win.
East Palestine 12, Lisbon 2
LISBON -- Nick Baiamonte worked 61/3 innings, allowed only two hits and struck out 15 batters for the Bulldogs. He also hit a triple and two singles.
Wes Best hit a double and two singles, while Jake Harvey, Tommy Powers, Dan Hanolt and Taylor Snyder each had two hits.
Alec Beach and Jon Crowell hit a double apiece for the Blue Devils.
