Epilepsy Fund plans awareness walk

AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Epilepsy Fund Inc. will have an awareness walk Saturday beginning at the Austintown Plaza on Mahoning Avenue.
The walk begins at noon, with registration at 11 a.m. The first 100 people registering will be selected to walk. Registration will be at the starting desk located at the old Hill's Department Store in the plaza.
Participation is encouraged for everyone to show their support for those with seizures.
The local event coincides with the first National Walk for Epilepsy, which will be Saturday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The MVEF serves those with seizure disorders in the tri-county area and provides supportive services to children and adults in the community as well as educational information about epilepsy.
Epilepsy, a chronic disease of the nervous systems, affects nearly 3 million Americans.
A Mahoning Valley Epilepsy Fund press release says, "The walk is an opportunity to gather together to raise awareness of epilepsy. Information on treatment, first aid, and myths about the disorder will be featured."
Lane Ambulance paramedics will be on hand to demonstrate how to apply proper first aid when someone is experiencing a seizure.
The MVEF is located at 25 N. Canfield-Niles Road. Those diagnosed with a seizure disorder are encouraged by the epilepsy fund to call the office at (330) 270-8037.
