Cop who shot attacker acted properly, IAD says

YOUNGSTOWN — Wick Park Patrolman Jerry Stanley’s use of deadly force against a man beating him with a pipe was proper conduct, said Lt. Rod Foley, Internal Affairs Division commander.

Stanley shot Bienvenido Carmona, 41, of North Garland Avenue on March 12 when Carmona threatened to kill the officer and tried to grab the gun when it fell. The investigation into the shooting found that Stanley had a reasonable belief that Carmona, a mentally disturbed combatant, posed a significant threat of serious physical injury or death.

Carmona is charged with felonious assault and aggravated robbery and remains in jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. His lawyer has described him as bipolar and schizophrenic. A sanity evaluation was ordered by a judge, and Carmona will be back in municipal court April 24 for a status hearing.
