COLUMBUS -- Daniel Wulker scored Cincinnati Moeller's only basket in the fourth quarter, a putback with 1:14 left, and the Fighting Crusaders hung on to beat crosstown rival Cincinnati St. Xavier 43-40 in the Division I championship on Saturday.
Wulker's shot, which came after Moeller (25-2) had squandered a nine-point lead in the second half, gave the seventh-ranked Crusaders their third victory of the season over St. Xavier (21-6) and bragging rights in the Greater Catholic League that Moeller also won this year.
Final moments
After Wulker's shot, St. Xavier ran the clock down until Kevin Hickey missed a 3-pointer from the right wing that was rebounded by Troy Tabler, who was fouled with five seconds left.
Tabler made the first shot and missed the second. The Bombers quickly got down the court, but Brad Loesing's 3-pointer from the left side was off the mark at the buzzer.
It was the first time two teams from the same league played for the state championship since 2004 when St. Henry defeated Versailles 61-49 in the Division III title game. Both of those teams belong to the Midwest Athletic Conference.
It was only the second time that the big-school title has come down to two teams from the same league, the last time coming in 1992 when the Greater Miami Conference's West Chester Lakota beat Lima Senior.
Tabler, son of former big-leaguer Pat Tabler, led Moeller with 11 points, 10 in the first half. He made two 3-pointers, the first one tying the game at 18 and the second giving the Crusaders a five-point lead, 25-20.
Walt Gibler scored 19 points and hit 15-of-16 foul shots to lead St. Xavier. With the Bombers trailing by four, Terry Martin fouled out with 2:45 left and then was called for a technical foul.
Gibler made all four shots, but St. Xavier was unable to convert on the following possession.
Wulker then hit two foul shots to put Moeller up 40-38 and then Gibler made two more foul shots to tie it.
Schenley 78, Chester 71
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Deandre Kane had 21 points and DeJuan Blair dominated the middle with 18 points to lead Schenley to the PIAA Class AAAA championship.
Schenley (30-3) led the entire way in an athletic game that featured lots of transition buckets and physical play. Chester (28-6) managed to narrow the deficit to 77-71 with 8.9 seconds left, but couldn't get closer.
Nasir Robinson notched 15 points and 15 boards before fouling out for Chester, while Micah Cover had 20 points and Karon Burton scored 19.
