SMARTS schedules student exhibit

The exhibition explores the photographer's interpretation of 'dream.'
YOUNGSTOWN -- SMARTS, Students Motivated by the Arts, is holding a Youngstown State University student photo exhibition now until April 13.
The show, titled "Day and Night, Youngstown State University Department of Art Advanced-level Student Photography Exhibition," is at the SMARTS Gallery, 258 Federal Plaza West, adjacent to the DeYor Performing Arts Center, formerly Powers Auditorium.
The SMARTS Gallery will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and Saturdays by appointment for the duration of the exhibit.
The photos are by YSU students in the Advanced Photography Class and advanced-level students enrolled for Independent Study credits in the spring 2007.
Behind the exhibit
Organized by YSU Assistant Professor of Photography Peter HappelChristian, the student work in the exhibition explores the idea of "dream" in its many incarnations.
Each semester, students work with HappelChristian and/or assistant professor of photography Kelli Connell on self-guided, semesterlong projects of their own research and design.
"Day and Night" is an opportunity for photography students to gain additional experience in the process of exhibiting their artwork and to share their ideas and talents with the local community.
Student photographers in the exhibition are: Jen Cann and Amy Skvarka of Youngstown, Kelly Krabill of Louisville, Ohio, Mary Kratochvil of Mentor, Mikenna McClurg of Warren, Kristina Smith of Struthers, Jen Sullivan of Austintown, Stacey Torma of Brookfield and Jen Turner of Warren.
SMARTS is an arts education project of the YSU College of Fine and Performing Arts, the Beeghly College of Education and a number of local arts organizations.
SMARTS offers free public arts education classes to students in Youngstown and the region. For more information, call (330) 941-2787 or visit the SMARTS Web site at www.fpa.ysu.edu/smarts.
