Here's a list of scholarships available for college and college-bound students.
Junior Civic League: The Junior Civic League will be awarding a larger amount of scholarship funds this year as a result of a partnership with the Youngstown State University Foundation. The foundation recently announced the creation of the "Junior Civic Scholarship" and will match funds from the proceeds of the 2006 Cinderella Ball, thereby creating additional scholarships for eligible freshman attending YSU.
The Junior Civic League Scholarship Program awards scholarships to academically talented students of African-American descent who attend public and private schools within the Mahoning Valley. These students must intend to pursue an undergraduate college degree, full-time. The League has awarded more than 375,000 in scholarships to high school students based on academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and personal qualities.
To be eligible, students must: Have at least one parent of African-American origin, be a graduating senior at a public or private high school in the Mahoning Valley, seek an associate or bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or enroll in a school of nursing that is affiliated with a university and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Scholarships are 1,500 each and nonrenewable. The scholarship is divided into increments paid upon proof of enrollment and grades each semester or quarter during the freshman year. Applications, along with an official high school transcript, a personal essay, three letters of recommendation and proof of household income must be postmarked no later than April 9. Students may download an application at www.juniorcivicleague.org.
Salem Quota Club: The club's annual "Mona McArtor Quota Award" is being offered in the amount of 500 this year. Applicants are required to be enrolled or enrolling in an accredited college or university to major in audiology, speech pathology or deaf education.
