Fuel leak shuts down disabilities center

AUSTINTOWN -- Clients at Mahoning County's Mental Retardation and Developmentally Disabled facility for adults with disabilities are expected to return to the Javit Court center Monday after a diesel fuel leak sent them home Friday.
A manager at the Centre at Javit Court, which provides daytime services, discovered that the tank of an emergency generator at the facility was leaking Friday morning.
Larry Duck, superintendent of the county's Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities Board, said personnel decided not to open the center because of the disruption.
Of the 59 clients who arrived to use the center Friday, 28 were diverted to Leonard Kirtz School and the remaining 31 went home, Duck said.
Both Duck and firefighters said there was no safety risk.
Andrew Frost III, assistant fire chief, said it will likely take a couple of days for the facility to clean up the soil that was affected.
