Man gets probation, treatment

WARREN -- A 20-year-old city man has been sentenced to five years' probation and several months of treatment at an alternative sentencing facility for accidentally shooting to death his 7-month-old half-brother Dec. 3, 2005.
David E. Young, of School Street N.W., pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in January in the death of Adam Gunter. He could have received one to five years in prison.
Chris Becker, assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, said the shooting occurred when Young was handling a sawed-off shotgun at the School Street address, pointed it at a wall and fired. The blast struck Gunter in the abdomen as he slept in his crib in the next room, killing him.
On Wednesday, Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court ordered Young to be locked up in the Trumbull County Jail until the Northeast Ohio Community Alternative Program in Warren has space available.
Robin Gunter, mother of both David E. Young and the victim, spoke before sentencing, asking Judge McKay not to send Young to prison.
