NILES -- The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley is alerting residents that it does not solicit funds door to door. The mission said it received a complaint from a Niles resident who said a person was seeking money for what was termed the "Volunteer Rescue Mission" and returned later to get inside the home.
New citizens sworn in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday ceremony before Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Bruce John Farrant, Salem, United Kingdom; Vasiliki Hasapes, Poland, Greece; Minal Rajesh Shah, North Lima, India; Shaaban Abd El Wahed Khodary Abd El Wahed, Boardman, Egypt.
Drug raid in Warren
WARREN -- City police seized suspected crack cocaine and marijuana during a Tuesday raid at 1648 Woodbine Ave. S.E. Lt. Thomas Skoczylas, narcotics unit commander, said the raid netted about a quarter-ounce of suspected crack and half an ounce of marijuana. Charges are pending a complete investigation and lab results of the suspected drugs.
Thieves steal pipes,cause 4,000 water bill
BOARDMAN -- Thieves stole about 60 in copper piping from a vacant house on Terrace Drive, leaving a water-filled basement in their wake. An employee of Gary Crim Inc., Market Street, Youngstown, which owns the house, told police that the company received a 4,000 water bill for the property. When the employee went to the house to investigate Wednesday, he found the front door forced open, copper piping gone and the basement filled with water. The damage occurred sometime within the last month, the employee believes. Neighbors reported seeing vehicles in the driveway of the vacant house over the last few weeks. It appeared people were working on the house, the neighbors told police.
Police seek ATVs
NILES -- Police are asking for the public's help in finding the owners of four-wheeled, all-terrain vehicles. State law prohibits four-wheelers and scooters on any road. The department has been receiving complaints of these vehicles being driven recklessly at high speeds. Those with information are asked to contact police at (330) 652-9944.
Armed robbers sought
SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon police were in the process Thursday of identifying three men involved in an early-morning robbery on East Silver Street. Police Chief Mike Menster said two white men and a black man went into a home on the 400 block and one pulled a gun at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. There were three people inside. Menster said the gun was placed on the neck of one of the three men inside and he was then pushed to the floor. He said all three men inside the house were punched and kicked. The robbers took off with about 400 in cash and a necklace, the chief said.
Victim fights robber
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A man leaving Eckerd Pharmacy on East State Street was attacked by another man who tried to take the victim's wallet. Police said a 48-year-old Hermitage man was entering his car with two shopping bags at 10 a.m. Wednesday when he was hit in the side of the face. The two men struggled and the attacker ran off behind the store, police said. The attacker is described as a white man in his late 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with brown hair.
Meeting in Bolindale
HOWLAND -- A public meeting to discuss infrastructure needs in the Bolindale section of the township will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bolindale Fire Station, 3403 Ridge Ave. The township and Trumbull County Planning Commission are seeking a 570,000 Community Development Block Grant for neighborhood revitalization.
