About 100 officials and residents from several Mahoning County townships attended a two-hour session in support of making a half-percent sales and use tax permanent and to voice concerns regarding their communities. A sampling of officials' and residents' comments:
Commissioner John McNally IV: "Without that [sales tax] money in place, we can't do our jobs, and as far as I'm concerned, we can' t have a safe community."
Commissioner Anthony Traficanti: "We can no longer depend on Washington, D.C., or the state to bail us out. Charity starts at home."
Bob Kale, Berlin Center resident: "I feel the sales tax is necessary, but it seems we're getting nothing for our money."
Sue Lemmon, Milton Township trustee: "Property taxes are killing us."
