YOUNGSTOWN -- Activities are scheduled in the next few days to raise money and food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley's 2007 Harvest for Hunger campaign.
The 2007 Harvest for Hunger goal is 65,000 and 35,000 pounds of food, Second Harvest officials said. Each day, Second Harvest distributes 20,000 pounds of food to 170 hunger relief programs in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
On Saturday, the Llucky Llamas 4-H Club of Mahoning County is collecting food and money and raising awareness for Second Harvest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kmart Plaza, 4475 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, and at Sam's Club, 6361 South Ave., Boardman. The club will have llamas at Kmart.
In Boardman, local celebrities from WFMJ, WBCB, Hot 101 Radio and local sports team mascots will bag groceries at the Boardman Giant Eagle store, 1201 Doral Drive, from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday to raise money for the Harvest for Hunger.
Here's the deal
The celebrities will bag groceries of customers participating in the "Check Out Hunger" promotion.
Shoppers can participate by tearing off a coupon in the checkout aisle that adds a charitable donation for Second Harvest onto their grocery bill. Contributions can also be made by visiting harvestforhunger.org, Second Harvest officials said.
The 2006 Harvest for Hunger raised 60,000 and collected 27,000 pounds of food. Giant Eagle annually donates some 7 million worth of food to food banks across all its markets, officials said.
Charity basketball games last Friday in Lordstown between village and school employees and between students and teachers raised 1,106 and 1,173 pounds of nonperishable food.
