VACCINE DUMPING A closer look

The problem: More than 10 million doses of unused flu vaccine are expected to be destroyed after they expire June 30, despite growing evidence the vaccine may still be protective. Vaccines don't degrade for a couple of years and could be useful during a shortage or flu pandemic.
Why is it dumped? Each year a new batch of vaccine is produced to match the latest flu strain, and that version would be more protective than the old vaccine.
Where experts stand: Most favor the current practice, but some say changes are worth considering.
