SPRING TRAINING | Tribe/Bucs roundup

Devil Rays 7, Indians 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Indians manager Eric Wedge said Fausto Carmona will be his fifth starter because of the abdominal injury to Cliff Lee. Carmona will follow C.C. Sabathia, Jake Westbrook, Jeremy Sowers and Paul Byrd in Cleveland's rotation. In Tuesday's game, non-roster invitee Gary Glover and five relievers combined on a one-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Indians. Glover pitched three hitless innings, walked one and struck out none. "I thought Glover started it out very well for us and our whole bullpen," said Devil Rays manager Maddon, who is targeting Glover as a possible long reliever. "He's a guy in the bullpen that can go more than four innings."vCleveland got its lone hit in the sixth inning when Andy Marte hit a line-drive single to left off Scott Dohmann. Indians starter Jake Westbrook allowed seven runs and 11 hits in four innings. He faced 24 batters and threw just eight first-pitch strikes. Tampa Bay scored six runs in the fourth, getting four straight two-out, extra-base hits. "It was one of those things," Wedge said. "We didn't play very well behind him. He did do a good job, just a few balls were up, and you expect to see that every now and again during spring training."
Pirates 3, Tigers 1
BRADENTON, Fla. -- When Sean Burnett was at his lowest while rehabilitating from two arm operations, he received words of encouragement from Jim Leyland. A rejuvenated Burnett allowed two hits in 42/3 scoreless innings in a victory over Leyland's Detroit Tigers. Burnett was playing in a charity golf tournament sponsored by the Pirates in 2005 while he was recovering from reconstructive elbow and shoulder operations. Leyland, the Pirates manager from 1986-96 and then a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals, also was participating. "He came up to me and told me to keep my head up because I had a bright future," Burnett said. "That meant a lot to me. I was really down because I couldn't pitch all year. To hear that from such a greatly respected baseball man as Jim Leyland was really important, and it helped keep me going." Leyland remembered the conversation and was happy to see Burnett back to full health. Burnett has not allowed a run in 112/3 innings over three games. Burnett gave up two hits and three walks while striking out four. espite the 0.00 ERA, he still appears to be a long shot to make the starting rotation, behind Tony Armas and Shawn Chacon. "Hopefully, I've given the people making the decisions something to think about," Burnett said. "I came into spring training knowing I had no margin for error, and I've tried to be lights out right from the start. I feel like I've thrown the ball really well. I guess we'll see where it takes me." Adam LaRoche, the Pirates' key offseason acquisition, hit his first home run spring training. LaRoche had a career-high 32 home runs for Atlanta last season.
