Officials: Sewer rate increase is needed

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Renovation of the Park Porter building downtown is on schedule.
WARREN -- Customers of the Trumbull County Metropolitan Sewer District in the townships of Liberty, Brookfield, Lordstown, Champion, Newton and parts of Weathersfield, Warren and Vienna, are likely to see a rate increase in the next two to three months.
Gary Newbrough, county sanitary engineer, discussed a proposal with county commissioners Tuesday, asking that MS Consultants of Youngstown be paid 3,400 to conduct a sewer rate study for the district. Commissioners are expected to approve a study today.
Newbrough said that the district has not had a rate increase since June 13, 2001, and that rate increases become necessary from time to time to keep the district financially secure.
A preliminary evaluation of finances of the district suggest that an increase will probably be needed. The consultant will advise how much.
The sanitary engineer oversees the operations of three county sewer districts. The rate for the Metropolitan district -- the largest of the three with 9,789 customers -- is 4.20 per thousand gallons of sewage.
JFS move
In other business, commissioners are expected to advertise for bids today for a company to move the county's Department of Job and Family Services and One-Stop jobs offices from their present locations on South Park Avenue and West Market Street to the county-owned Park Porter Building at the corner of Park and Porter streets.
The Park Porter Building is undergoing a 2.7 million renovation and is expected to be ready for move-in at the end of June. Tom Mahoney, JFS director, said the renovation is on schedule.
Commissioners are also expected to receive petitions by 18 property owners on Gilbert Street in Weathersfield Township for sewer line construction.
