10 Valley standouts earn honors

Lou Coppola, who will lead Poland High into the Division II state semifinals Thursday at Value City Arena, was one of 10 area players named to the All-Ohio team by The Associated Press Monday.
Coppola, a 6-foot-5 senior who averaged 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, was named honorable mention, along with Justin Allen of Niles, Corey Hitt of Hubbard, Kyle Rockwell of West Branch and Joey Wines of East Liverpool.
Joe Carbon of Canfield, who was named player of the year in the Metro Athletic Conference, and Liberty's Mychal Doblanski were named special mention.
In Div. I, the only area players to receive recognition were Warren Harding's Keelyn Franklin (special mention) and Sheldon Brogdan and Damian Eargle (honorable mention).
Carbon, a 6-3 senior, led the MAC in rebounding (8.4) and was second in scoring (17.0) and field goal shooting (54.4 percent), and third in 3-point shooting (37.5 percent).
Doblanski, a 6-2 senior, averaged 21.9 points per game to lead Liberty.
Allen, a 6-3 senior, averaged 14.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the Red Dragons to rank fourth and sixth in the MAC in those categories, respectively. He shot 34.7 percent on 3-pointers.
Rockwell, a 6-5 senior, averaged 15.3 points per game for West Branch, while Hitt, a 6-1 junior, averaged 16.3 points per game.
Franklin, a 6-3 senior, averaged 10.1 points per game for the Raiders, while Brogdan, a 6-2 sophomore, averaged 13.4, and Eargle, a 6-8 junior, averaged 14.3.
Statewide
Jon Diebler of Upper Sandusky was named player of the year in Div. II and is the favorite to be named Mr. Basketball later this week. Diebler averaged 42.7 points per game and is Ohio's all-time leading scorer.
Dan Addis of Copley and Rick VanMatre of Greenfield McClain shared coach of the year honors.
In Div. I, Canton GlenOak's Kosta Koufas was named player of the year, while Jack Greynolds Jr. of GlenOak and Eric Flannery of Lakewood St. Edward shared coach of the year.
