MLB ROUNDUP \ Tuesday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Orioles 3, Yankees 2

BALTIMORE — Corey Patterson capped a perfect night at the plate by scoring the winning run on Scott Proctor’s bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning. Patterson led off the ninth with a walk and Brian Roberts singled. Proctor (1-5) then made a sensational diving catch on a bunt by Chris Gomez, but missed an opportunity to double up Patterson, who had strayed three-quarters of the way to third base. After a walk to Nick Markakis loaded the bases, Proctor missed on a 3-2 pitch to Ramon Hernandez. Patterson went 3-for-3, scored two runs and drove in one. Johnny Damon homered for the Yankees, who have lost three straight and six of seven.

Rangers 9, Tigers 6

DETROIT — Marlon Byrd hit a tiebreaking triple in the ninth inning and Texas beat Detroit after blowing a three-run lead in the eighth. Brad Wilkerson hit a three-run homer and Sammy Sosa had two RBIs for the Rangers.

White Sox 6, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Andy Gonzalez and Jim Thome homered to back Jon Garland’s strong pitching and help Chicago snap a season-worst five-game losing streak. Gonzalez, who had four hits and drove in two runs, hit his first career homer — a two-run shot off James Shields (6-3) in the fifth inning. Thome hit the 482nd of his career for a 5-0 lead. Garland (5-5) allowed three singles, a double and Greg Norton’s home run in seven-plus innings.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Braves 6, Nationals 2

ATLANTA — Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered twice, slumping Andruw Jones went deep for the first time in 21⁄2 weeks to lead Atlanta past Washington. Saltalamacchia hit solo shots in the third and fifth innings, the first multi-homer game of the rookie’s young career. But the most encouraging swing for the Braves came later in the fifth. Jones was mired in a 1-for-31 slump that had knocked his average below .200. He had gone 53 at-bats without managing even an extra-base hit since his last homer, June 9 off Jason Marquis of the Cubs.

Cubs 8, Rockies 5

CHICAGO — Cliff Floyd hit a two-run homer and Chicago held off another late Colorado rally to win its fifth straight. Floyd’s fourth homer sparked a three-run first inning that put Chicago on top to stay. The Cubs added four runs in the fifth, highlighted by Koyie Hill’s two-run double.

Phillies 11, Reds 4

PHILADELPHIA — Carlos Ruiz drove in a career-best four runs and stole home, and Philadelphia moved to four games over .500, matching its season high. Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Chase Utley homered for the Phillies, who finished with 16 hits and gave Kyle Kendrick plenty of support in his third start since replacing injured Freddy Garcia in the rotation. Kendrick (2-0) allowed four runs and six hits in six innings. Fellow rookie Homer Bailey (2-1) lasted just 12⁄3 innings, allowing six runs and six hits.

Brewers 11, Astros 5

MILWAUKEE — Johnny Estrada’s grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth inning as Milwaukee rallied to beat Houston. Craig Biggio inched closer to the 3,000 hit mark with a single, leaving him three shy of becoming the 27th player to reach that milestone. The NL Central-leading Brewers have won 11 of 13.

Cardinals 5, Mets 3, 11 innings

NEW YORK — Brendan Ryan hit his first career home run in the 11th inning and St. Louis snapped New York’s four-game winning streak. Down to their final strike in the ninth, the Mets tied it at 3 when Shawn Green drew a walk against closer Jason Isringhausen and scored on Jose Valentin’s double. Isringhausen avoided further damage, however, and the Cardinals soon recovered. Ryan, a rookie, had three hits and two RBIs. Scott Spiezio and Juan Encarnacion each drove in a run for St. Louis, which snapped an eight-game losing streak in the regular season against the NL East-leading Mets. Paul Lo Duca’s solo shot in the eighth off Russ Springer cut it to 3-2.
