State makes suggestions for Salem schools' performance
SALEM — The Salem schools could save more than $1 million a year through recommendations in a performance audit released today by the Ohio Auditor’s Office.
The suggestions include:
•Saving $373,000 by ending the practice of paying employee retirement for teaching and non-teaching workers.
• Saving $107,000 for paying a portion of administrators’ retirement contribution.
•Making adjustments in health insurance coverage to save $200,000 a year.
•Using strategies to reduce vocational education by $120,000.
•Increasing meal purchases to save $28,000. That would include direct certification of students eligible for free and reduced priced lunches, as well as asking what students want to see on the menu.
•Eliminating two bus runs, and trying to increase bus usage, to save $33,000.
