HOWLAND — The board of education is expected to place two renewal levies to generate a total of $5 million annually on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.

The board passed a resolution Monday to place one emergency levy before voters that will generate $2 million annually for five years.

District Treasurer Tom Krispinsky said the county auditor will determine the millage that is needed to generate $2 million. He said it’s about 3 mills.

The board also passed a resolution expressing its intention to place a second, five-year emergency issue on the ballot to generate $3.05 million annually.

Krispinsky said the auditor also must determine the millage to generate that amount. It will be less than 5 mills.

The treasurer noted that since the issues are renewals, it won’t mean additional taxes for property owners.

New teachers

Superintendent John Rubesich introduced 12 members of the teaching class for the 2007-08 school year.

Rubesich said it’s the largest group of new teachers that he has seen at the district. The vacancies opened with 15 retirements.

Two more teachers will be hired. The district needs a teacher to work with gifted pupils at the elementary level. A language arts teacher also will be hired for the high school, the superintendent explained.

Introduced to the board and their subjects are: Richard Burnett, art, Mines and Springs elementary schools; Stephen Kovach, language arts, high school; Curt Kuntz, intervention specialist, high school; Kathleen Libert, science, high school; Amanda Pallante, math, high school; Nicole Pauloski, language arts, high school; Nicholas Roberts, science, middle school; Matthew Saborse, fifth grade, North Road Intermediate; Heather Stirling, intervention specialist, North Road; Robert Thompson, social studies, high school; and Nicole Wayt, intervention specialist, North Road.

In other business, the board awarded a $92,194 contract to R.T. Vernal Paving Inc. of North Lima for a middle school paving project.

The front lot will be extended so pupils aren’t dropped off between vehicles. The back lot for staff parking will be resurfaced.
