Houston Dynamo edges Wizards, 1-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Ianni picked a good time to score his first Major League Soccer goal.

Ianni’s headed goal off a corner kick by teammate Stuart Holden in the 81st minute provided the Houston Dynamo a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

The win improved Houston’s record to 7-5-1, second in MLS’s Western Conference.

The Wizards (6-4-2) dominated the first half, reaching the intermission with an 8-1 advantage in shots and 4-1 in shots on goal. Scott Sealy had two good scoring opportunities in the game’s first seven minutes, and Michael Harrington, Jose Burciaga Jr. and Jack Jewsbury all had first-half chances.

But Kansas City appeared weary in the second half, and Houston picked up its attack.

Midfielder Brian Mullan had two decent scoring chances before the Dynamo finally capitalized in the 81st minute. Holden’s high corner kick found Ianni’s head at the near post, at the top of the 6-yard box, and Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman had no chance for a save.
