LITTLE STEEL STRIKE: Grimly dominating the gate to the open-hearth unit of the Republic Steel Co. in Warren is this machine-gun unit of Company D of the 145th Infantry of the Ohio National Guard. The guard was protecting the entrance to the plant on June 24, 1937. Workers went on strike against the so-called “little” steel companies — Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Republic — in Youngstown and in South Chicago. The strike was violent with 10 workers in South Chicago and two in Youngstown killed. The plant pictured above today is the site of WCI Steel.
