YOUNGSTOWN — One of the area’s biggest fundraising events will be this week.

The Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser — the only one conducted by the foundation each year — on Thursday and Friday.

The event will kick off Thursday with a celebrity dinner and auction at the Holiday Inn in Boardman. A huge golf outing will follow Friday at Youngstown Country Club.

Last month, the foundation awarded $40,000 in scholarships with eight recipients receiving $5,000 grants.

The dinner/auction, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., will include various autographed memorabilia from the San Francisco 49ers and owners John and Denise DeBartolo York.

Other memorabilia has been donated from the Cleveland Cavaliers and professional golfer John Daly.

Also being auctioned will be a trip for two to the Super Bowl in Arizona, a Florida condo for a week, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns tickets with pre-game field passes as well as Notre Dame season tickets.

There also will be jewelry available and a 20-minute grocery shopping spree.

Guest appearances

Many celebrities will be on hand for both days, including San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan and several 49ers players.

Alumni from the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers will be in attendance, along with other NFL alumni.

A special guest will be Notre Dame legend Rudy Reuttiger, the inspiration for the movie “Rudy,” and there will be an appearance by Youngstown boxer Kelly Pavlik.

The golf tournament, which has been sold out for months, will kick off with a registration at 8 a.m. with a shot-gun start set for 9 a.m.

Dinner tickets are $175 per person with corporate sponsorships available.

Anyone interested in attending or donating to the foundation should call (330) 965-2045.
