NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Lawrence County commissioners will have their public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Scott Township Fire Hall on Pa. Route 108. The commissioners will not have their regularly scheduled 10 a.m. meeting Tuesday. The public is invited to attend.

Task Force results

GREEN — The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force stopped 1,312 motorists from Friday night through Saturday morning at checkpoints on U.S. Route 62 and Middletown Road and state Route 45 at Pine Lake Road. One person was cited for drunken driving. Two were cited for driving with suspended licenses and 24 cited for not wearing a seat belt.

Free kids camp offered

NEWTON FALLS — The Northeast Ohio Salvation Army is having a free camp July 25-30. The camp is open to kids ages 6-12. The camp is near Carrollton, on Leesville Lake. Swimming, hiking, crafts, fishing and more activities will be provided. The kids go to the camp and return on a charter bus. Applications can be picked up at the Church Mouse Thrift Shop in Newton Falls. All applications must be in by July 15. For further information, contact Doug or Clara at (330) 872-5574.

Mercer road work
set for this week

MERCER, Pa. — North and South Diamond streets and other streets around the Mercer County Courthouse will be paved this week, but no daytime traffic or parking disruption is expected for area. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said the work will be done at night, beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday, then continue on the same schedule through Friday morning. In addition to North and South Diamond streets, paving will be done on Pitt Street, East and West Butler and Maple streets. Traffic is expected to be maintained when roads are milled Monday and Tuesday nights, but the roads may be closed when the roads are paved Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Truck entering landfill
cited for leaking load

MEADVILLE, Pa. — A truck coming into a Mercer County landfill was one of 26 in the region recently cited by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for a safety violation. One truck out of 30 inspected at the Tri-County Transfer Station in Mercer County had a leaking load, the DEP said. Seneca Landfill in Butler County had the highest number of violations with seven leaking loads out of 117 trucks inspected. Other landfills where trucks were inspected included Lake View Landfill in Erie County, Veolia Greentree Landfill in Elk County and the McKean County Landfill. The DEP staff inspected a total of 563 trucks June 13. All the violations were against haulers and not the landfills.
