Road workers in New Castle get new contract

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Union Township supervisors unanimously approved a six-year contract with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees bargaining unit that represents the township’s six road workers.

The contract is retroactive to the Nov. 15, 2006, expiration of the last contract and extends to Dec. 31, 2013.

It provides a 40-cent hourly increase each year of the contract, Supervisor Kenneth Guinaugh said.

Estimated cost of the increases over the life of the contract is $24,768. The cost is based on a 40-hour work week and the fact that three of the workers go on regular layoff for 18 weeks each year.

Wages under the old contract ranged from $15.34 hourly for nonunion labor to $19.50 per hour for an Operator 2 mechanic/welder. Supervisors said there were no other contract changes.

Supervisor Pat Angiolelli congratulated his fellow supervisors and the road workers on the contract settlement and called it “a darned good contract, which saved the township some dollars.”
