Man robbed at gunpoint
YOUNGSTOWN — A 29-year-old Verona Avenue man told police he was robbed at gunpoint as he walked near Verona and Garland avenues. The victim said a man approached him around 8:15 p.m., pulled a handgun and demanded, “Gimme what ya got.” The victim said he handed over $65 and the gunman fled. The robber was described as about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 190 pounds. He had blond hair.
No DUI citations issued
WARREN — Police issued 42 citations but none for drunken driving during a Trumbull County Operating a Vehicle while Impaired Task Force checkpoint Wednesday. Capt. Tim Bowers said the citations were issued at a checkpoint at North Park Avenue and Scott Street from 5 to 9 p.m. Most of the citations given were for failure to wear a seat belt. The city police warrants squad and U.S. Marshals Service arrested six people on outstanding warrants.
Street cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN — Bryn Mawr Block Watch group on the East Side will have a street cleanup from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Workers will meet on the corner of McGuffey and Jacobs Road and will be cleaning up Jacobs Road toward McKelvey Lake.
The block watch was created by residents to keep their neighborhoods clean and safe. This cleanup is in conjunction with the Northeast Home Owners Association and Mahoning County’s Green Team.
Sheryl Moss, litter control coordinator for the homeowners association, said the cleanup is open to any concerned citizen. The Green Team will be providing the gloves, trash bags and a truck. “It is our way of developing pride in our city,” Moss said.
Construction approved
MERCER, Pa. — Construction of a new district justice building in Pine Township is expected to get under way this fall, Mercer County commissioners said. Commissioner Brian Beader said that core drillings were satisfactory at the 5.8-acre site, which is on Pa. Route 208, Pine Township, near the township building.
The drillings showed there are no abandoned mines in the area, paving the way for bids to be advertised in August. The new offices will replace District Justice Larry Silvis’ offices in Jackson Center.
Commissioners have said his current building has many problems, including an inconvenient location between Grove City and Sandy Lake, inadequate space, a leaky roof and security difficulties.
Fugitive arrested
YOUNGSTOWN — Gabriel S. Green, wanted as a fugitive on a charge of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, was arrested outside his Steel Street home by officers from the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force.
Officers said they spotted Green, 22, getting into a car behind his home around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Green appeared nervous, and, though he said he had no job, he had $1,734 on him, police said.
Officers called in a K-9 unit to search the vehicle for drugs and the dog hit on an area behind the driver’s door, police said.
Officers found a plastic bag containing 10 suspected OxyContin tablets, police said.
Green was charged with possession of drugs and taken to Mahoning County jail. He was arraigned Thursday and returned to jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.
Arrest after traffic stop
YOUNGSTOWN — Police said a traffic stop led to the arrest of a Mabel Street man on weapon and drug charges. Officers pulled over a car in the 500 block of Cameron Avenue late Tuesday.
Police said Michael Johnson Jr., 18, was in the passenger seat. They ordered him out of the car and said they found two small plastic bags of suspected crack cocaine on the seat. While Johnson was being taken into custody, he told officers there was a gun beneath his seat, police said. They recovered a handgun and charged Johnson with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cocaine.
He spent the night in Mahoning County jail and was freed on $10,000 bond after his arraignment Thursday.
